Can Bearded Dragons Eat Oranges? What Has to Hold for It to Keep Working

Yes, in small amounts and rarely. USDA FoodData Central lists raw orange, all commercial varieties, at 40 mg calcium and 14 mg phosphorus per 100 g, a calcium-to-phosphorus ratio of 2.9:1, which points the right way. The limits sit elsewhere. The same entry gives 9.35 g of sugar and 86.8 g of water per 100 g, and a 10 g piece delivers about 4 mg of calcium against 23 mg from the same weight of raw collards. Offer roughly 10 g, peeled and seeded, once or twice a month, and only in an enclosure whose UVB has been measured rather than assumed.

I came at animal feed from the brewery end, where spent grain is a disposal cost long before anyone calls it a protein source. That work leaves you with one habit: read a wet feed by its dry matter and its keeping time before you read its label. Orange reads badly on both counts and still passes here, purely because of how little of it ends up on the dish.

How much orange is one serving, in grams?

USDA gives four portion weights for raw orange: 96 g for a small fruit of 2⅜ inch diameter, 131 g for a medium at 2⅝ inch, 184 g for a large at 3 1/16 inch, and 180 g for a cup of sections. None of those is a serving for a lizard.

Published adult weights vary more than the care sheets let on. Six adult Pogona vitticeps in a 2019 study in Animals averaged 207.5 ± 28.0 g, at a mean snout–vent length of 16.3 cm. A 2025 case report in the same journal followed a three-year-old male that presented at 408 g and held 469–486 g through months of treatment. Zoo Med's own care sheet puts adult length at 16–24 inches. Two hundred to five hundred grams covers most adults, and weighing yours beats guessing.

So a medium orange is somewhere between a quarter and two-thirds of the animal's body weight. The unit here is grams of flesh, not fruit.

Ten grams is the working figure for an adult over 300 g; halve it for a smaller animal, and skip fruit for hatchlings, whose ration should be doing harder work than this. That 10 g is about one segment of a medium fruit, and it carries roughly a sixth of the calcium you would get from the same weight of collards.

Does the calcium-to-phosphorus ratio of oranges actually matter?

At 2.9:1 it is one of the better ratios in the fruit bowl, and it barely moves the week's arithmetic either way. The ration's ratio is decided by the insects and the dusting, and the numbers there are an order of magnitude larger.

A 2022 review in Animals on insects used in pet feed tabulates mealworms at 1–5 g calcium against 4–11 g phosphorus per kg, house crickets at 5–15 g calcium against 7–8 g phosphorus, and black soldier fly larvae at 58–93 g calcium against 5–13 g phosphorus. Mealworms can therefore run inverted, with several times more phosphorus than calcium, while soldier fly larvae run calcium-heavy by a wide margin. Ten grams of orange against a week of that is a rounding error.

Be careful with the target itself. The open peer review published alongside a 2020 PLoS One digestibility study on leopard geckos makes the point plainly: there is little data on optimum calcium-to-phosphorus ratios in reptiles, and for most vertebrates that have been studied the useful range is broad, typically 1:1 to 2:1. Anyone quoting you a precise ratio for a bearded dragon is quoting a convention.

What has to hold in the enclosure before fruit is worth discussing

Calcium the animal cannot absorb is calcium it does not have. That is the whole reason a sugar-and-water fruit is even a question worth asking rather than an obvious no.

The UV-Tool, published by Baines and colleagues in the Journal of Zoo and Aquarium Research in 2016, assigns Pogona vitticeps to Ferguson zone 3–4, with a basking surface of 40–45 °C. Zone 3 covers a UV index of 1.0–2.6 with a recorded field maximum of 2.9–7.4; zone 4 covers 2.6–3.5 with a maximum of 4.5–9.5. Zoo Med's lighting pages describe the practical version for those two zones: the sunbeam method, with UVI 3.0–7.0 over the basking site alone and a gradient falling to zero elsewhere, plus a shelter the animal can retreat into completely.

Distance is what sets that number. Arcadia publishes measured figures for its 14% D3+ Dragon T5, taken directly under a ProT5 reflector with a Solarmeter 6.5:

Mesh sits between lamp and animal in most setups and takes a bite out of every one of those figures. Zoo Med states the reduction varies by mesh type and size and tells keepers to measure through their own screen rather than trust a published figure.

Then there is age. Arcadia rates the Dragon lamp at a twelve-month working life; Zoo Med runs a reminder service that mails keepers at twelve months. The measurement behind that convention is in the UV-Tool paper: seven fluorescent tubes from two brands were run for a full year, 4,000 hours at 10–12 hours a day, and lost a mean of 39.9% of their UV index, with a range of 30–48%. Most of the early drop came in the first 105 hours of burn-in, at 12.6%. One tube from a third manufacturer lost 64% after 1,000 hours, roughly three months.

The lamp keeps lighting the whole time. That is the trap, and it is the same trap as an ingredient that still looks fine and has quietly stopped doing its job. A UV meter costs less than a vet consult for metabolic bone disease.

Oranges, tangerines and grapefruit: which citrus is the safe one?

None of them, and that is the useful answer. Related searches run from oranges to tangerines to grapefruit as though one of them will turn out to be the permitted version. USDA's own numbers say they are one category with one set of handling rules.

That last column is the one my trade would look at first, and it is arithmetic on the USDA figures rather than a published value. Strip the water out and citrus flesh is between 58% and 77% sugar. Orange holds the best ratio of the four and the second-highest sugar; tangerine is sweeter with a poorer ratio; pink grapefruit is the least sweet and sits closest to 1:1, with tougher segment walls that come back out whole. Swapping one for another changes the flavour of the treat and nothing that matters.

Peel, seeds, juice and slices: what to take off before serving

Orange peel looks excellent on paper. USDA lists it at 161 mg calcium and 21 mg phosphorus per 100 g, a ratio of 7.7:1, better than the flesh by a distance. It also carries 10.6 g of fibre per 100 g against 2.4 g in the flesh, it is the surface that meets whatever was sprayed or waxed on the way to the shop, and a dragon tears rather than chews. I take the peel off and I would not make an exception for organic fruit.

Juice moves in the opposite direction and the numbers are startling. Raw orange juice runs 11 mg calcium against 17 mg phosphorus per 100 g, a ratio of 0.65:1. Squeezing the fruit inverts the ratio, because the calcium is concentrated in the pith and membrane you have just thrown away, and it removes the fibre while leaving the sugar. Juice is the one citrus preparation I would rule out flat.

Seeds come out, every one. Orange slices go on the dish cut small, no wider than the gap between the animal's eyes, with the segment membrane pulled off if yours leaves it behind.

Preparing and serving it without creating a second problem

  1. Weigh the piece: 10 g for an adult over 300 g, 5 g for a smaller one.
  2. Peel completely and strip the white pith.
  3. Pick out every seed.
  4. Cut into pieces no wider than the space between the dragon's eyes.
  5. Serve in the morning, on a dish, alongside the day's greens.
  6. Remove whatever is left within two hours.

Step six is the one keepers skip, and it is the one I would fight for. A basking surface at 40–45 °C over a fruit that is 86.8% water is a warm culture medium with sugar already in it. In the brewery trade, spent grain comes out of the lauter tun at 71.9% to 83.85% moisture — a 2025 Foods study measured eleven samples and put the mean at 77.9% — and in summer it heats and sours within days. Nobody warns you about wet grain in week two. The physics on a feeding dish is the same, scaled down and speeded up by the lamp.

What the ration should be built from instead

Greens carry the load. Raw collards give 232 mg calcium and 25 mg phosphorus per 100 g, a ratio of 9.3:1 and nearly six times the calcium of orange flesh by weight. Build the plant side of the ration from that sort of material, dust the insects on the schedule your vet sets, and treat fruit as occasional interest rather than nutrition. Ten grams of orange twice a month is enrichment. It is not doing anything for the animal's mineral balance, and it does not need to.

What I cannot tell you is how your particular dragon will handle it. I read feed specs and spoilage curves, not lizards; clinical signs are a vet's territory, and loose stool after a new item is a reason to call one rather than to search again. What I can tell you is that the fruit is the least of the variables in this question. The lamp, its distance and its age decide whether any of the calcium in the bowl reaches bone.
