McMillan and colleagues’ Scientific Reports study assembled records for 584,734 UK dogs, 284,734 of them deceased. It estimated survival with living and deceased records rather than merely averaging the ages of dogs that had died. That design produced an estimated median age at death of 13.2 years for Golden Retrievers and 14.0 for Poodles. The paper did not identify Goldendoodles as a separate population.

A second cohort check points the same way without closing the Goldendoodle gap. A 2025 Aging Cell analysis followed 2,412 Golden Retrievers across 16,678 visits; 775 died, and hemangiosarcoma was the most frequently tracked condition among the deceased dogs, at 24%. That result still belongs to Golden Retrievers.

Size moved the signal. Among purebred dogs in that study, estimated median survival was 12.7 years for small breeds, 12.5 for medium breeds, and 11.9 for large breeds. Those figures cannot be pasted onto a crossbred dog. They support one restrained inference. A large Goldendoodle deserves a more conservative planning horizon than a mini.

A 70-pound adult falls inside PetMD’s 50-to-90-pound standard Goldendoodle range and near the Golden Retriever and male Standard Poodle parent ranges. There is no defensible “70 lb Goldendoodle lifespan” to quote to a decimal. Use the 10-to-15-year range, weigh the size evidence toward its shorter side, and let the dog’s health record revise that plan.

Does being a cross guarantee a longer life?

Crossbreeding does not guarantee that a Goldendoodle will outlive either parent breed. An F1 cross can gain genetic diversity and reduce the chance that a puppy receives two copies of some recessive variants. That is the sound biological case for hybrid vigor.

The large UK cohort keeps the claim in bounds. Health testing still matters because Golden Retrievers and Poodles do not bring identical inherited risks to a litter. Diversity can lower one recessive risk while leaving hip dysplasia, eye disease, cardiac disease, or risk carried through one line very much in play.

  4. Log departures from baseline. Note walking duration, stair use, appetite, water intake, sleep, house-training, vision in dim settings, and recovery after exercise. Bring the pattern, including its start date, instead of relying on “slowing down.”

I have never examined a dog’s hips or measured a canine cohort, and I cannot vouch personally for a treatment outcome.
